What options do you have if you can’t pay your electric bill?

Some months it may seem like there just isn’t enough money to go around, and you find that you are unable to pay for essentials, like your electricity. But not paying your utility bills can have major consequences.

Your service could be disconnected, or you may find the extra fines keep adding up, making it impossible to pay next month’s bill.

What to Do if You Can’t Pay Your Electric Bill

First of all, don’t panic! There are ways to get help with your utility bills. If you know that you will be unable to pay your electric bill, contact one of these agencies for emergency payment assistance right away.

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): LIHEAP is a government agency that has helped more than 5.5 million people with their energy bills.

The Office of Community Services, a Division of Energy Assistance, gave LIHEAP $3.03 billion in 2017 to help pay the energy bills of those who qualify.

LIHEAP will either give you a grant to pay your electric bills, or they will come and “weatherize” your home. This will help lower your electric bills every month, as weatherizing makes your home more energy efficient.

Utility Company Programs: You can also contact your electric company. Oftentimes they will work with you if you simply let them know your situation, as they have payment plans already in place for problems like these.

Local Charities: Some utility companies have partnered with local charities to help their customers find help. They often work with local agencies to get you the help you need.
