What is LIMS?

What is LIMS? LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) is a type of software laboratories can use to control samples and data during testing in a regulated environment. The software allows users to manage workflows, data, architectural support, data exchange, and more. This helps laboratory technicians keep precise track of what is going on in the lab and how the information is being generated and disseminated to others.

Software Development

Before computerized laboratory information management systems were developed, the tracking and control of samples were done manually. This used to be a very time-consuming and labor-intensive process that resulted in numerous human errors in the data generated. In 1982, the first commercial software was developed for sample and data management. The software was simple and was used with a minicomputer. As computers changed and became more powerful, laboratory software programs also became more functional and useful. Today, the software programs can be run on vast networks so different laboratories can share information more easily.

Core Functionality

The core functionality of LIMS software can be broken down into the three main components:

  • Sample Management:  As soon as a sample enters into the lab, it is registered into the software program. Information about the sample is also registered into the system. This would include things like the physical characteristics of the sample, how it develops, and its biochemical properties. As the sample goes through the testing process, the software keeps track of it every step of the way. The software also helps to manage any HIPAA, CLIA, GLP, and FDA regulatory guidelines the sample has to meet.
  • Instrument and Application Integration: The software can be integrated with the instrument and applications in a lab. This allows the software to input data directly from an instrument into a program. This has become increasingly important as data collection methods evolve. For instance, array sequencing has advanced greatly over the past 20-30 years and an incredible amount of data points can be produced during testing that needs to be kept in an organized fashion.
  • Data Exchange: The software allows researchers to share their findings via electronic data exchanges. This allows labs and businesses to share the data and review the results almost instantly. The data can also be entered into database management systems like MySQL that are openly shared.
