Training New Employees: 5 Strategies for Effective Training

It’s official: job seekers are in control of the market. If you want to find great employees, you’re competing with thousands of other employers for top talent.

Unless your benefits package is perfect, you’re unlikely to hire trained employees. Instead, you’ll be training new employees who already have the talent to work for you, but may need some help finding their footing.

We’re here to help you learn how to train employees the right way in 2022. Read on for a few top tips.

  1. Start With a Tour

Every employee training and onboarding process should start with a tour.

During the tour, make sure that your employee sees the entire workplace, not just their specific department. This may encourage inter-department collaboration in the future and it will make your employee feel more welcome.

When you get to your employee’s workspace, explain everything in detail. Introduce them to nearby employees.

  1. Assign a “Buddy”

While your new employee should know that you’re there if they need help or have any questions, it’s also a good idea to assign them a buddy. Make sure that the “buddy” consents to this; you want to choose someone who is eager and ready to help.

Their “buddy” is a peer resource. They can go to the buddy for help with small tasks that they don’t want to bother you with. They could also shadow the other employee before they’re ready to take on projects on their own.

This is also a great way to improve the social ecosystem of your workplace. You’re giving your new employee an instant friend.

  1. Give Positive Reinforcement and Encouragement

If you want to train employees effectively, always lead with the carrot, not the stick. Encourage your employees with praise and benefits and they’ll be more likely to learn and work well.

More and more employers are realizing the benefits of an employee value proposition. Employees hold the power now, so by offering your new employees benefits beyond payment, even while they’re in training, you’ll have better and more enthusiastic workers.

  1. Create an Open Environment

Your employee needs to know that they’re able to come to you with any questions and concerns both during and after their training period. You should have an open-door policy.

Make yourself as available as possible while your employee is still learning. Remember, things that seem simple to you and your long-term employees are still new to them.

Keep checking in with your employee, but try not to hover. If you ask your employee how things are going at various points during their training period, they’ll be more likely to tell you if something isn’t going well. They may be too nervous to convey this if they have to go to you.

  1. Provide Proper Resources

Have you given your employee everything that they need to succeed? Part of onboarding new employees is making sure that they have all of the materials that they need to do their jobs.

Make sure that they have access to all of the software, office supplies, tech devices, and personal resources (in this case, other employees) that will help them. Give them an in-depth information packet that tells them where they can find manuals, old files, accounts, and more.

Training New Employees Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

Training new employees might seem like a burden, but if you approach it the right way, you’ll finish the process with some of the best workers that you’ve ever had.

Use these tips to start an effective employee training plan.
