It’s hard to overstate the importance of effective leadership. Need proof? There are well over 28,000 book titles on the topic!
Good leaders inspire people, bring everyone together around a common goal, and facilitate growth at every turn. Bad leaders do the exact opposite. Let them run loose for too long and they can bring teams and entire organizations to their knees.
Are you trying to enhance the effectiveness of your leadership team? Let us help. Keep reading for 4 coaching strategies to help people become better leaders.
- Empower Them
One of the best coaching tips we could ever give is to focus on empowerment. Your leaders have to feel confident in their positions and capable of doing their job. They need to believe in themselves instead of seeking affirmation from above all the time.
After all, if they don’t, then how can they inspire such crucial qualities in their team?
It’s your responsibility to nurture these attributes in your leaders. Turn to them for help instead of the reverse, compliment them when they do well, and trust them to fulfill their responsibilities. Empower them at every turn and you’ll be rewarded in kind.
- Get Their Input
Team coaching of any kind is far more effective when the coachees take an active role in the process. It’s up to you to elicit that input, encourage their contributions, and ask impactful Socratic questions that provoke them to provide necessary solutions.
Ask lots of open questions (e.g. “what makes an effective leader?”), probe the coachees at every turn (e.g. “why do you think causes X to happen?”) and challenge their assumptions (e.g. “Why do you think that?”). Trust us, your ideas are more likely to hit home if they’re the ones to proffer the answers.
- Never Make It Personal
Imagine being told by your boss that you’re an ineffective, passive, and indecisive leader. It’d sting. And, worse, it may damage your confidence even further.
In other words, delivering this sort of personal feedback isn’t always helpful to your goals! It’s better to focus on someone’s behavior or the objective problem instead. For example, you could focus a conversation around the need for assertiveness and swift decision-making as opposed to their apparent shortcomings in these areas.
- Focus on Ways to Improve
Try to focus on solutions over problems. Of course, it’s important to identify and discuss the issue(s) first. But your coaching sessions will be more positive and productive if the emphasis is on resolution instead.
Don’t just talk about solutions either. Make sure you write everything down and establish a plan of action for improving everybody’s leadership capabilities. This will give you something to refer back to and discuss in follow-up meetings to come.
